Dirt Circuit - A brief History
Dirt Circuit Racing is a popular and exciting
form of motor sport that through the auspices of the Associated Dirt
Circuit Clubs of South Australia Inc. Is promoted by eight member clubs in
the Northern and Western Regions of South Australia. Dirt Circuit Racing
has been promoted as a relatively inexpensive and competitive form of motor
sport. Conducted totally on a dirt track, that can cover a range of
variables from long and short tracks, sharp hairpins to sweeping curves,
multi directional racing and often multiple tracks at the same venue.
Members clubs are Whyalla, Tumby Bay,
Pt Lincoln, Port Pirie, Roxby Downs, Pt Augusta,
Ceduna and West Coast which has there track at Elliston.
Classes of Racing
Standard Class made up of Holdens
and Falcons built to specifications to keep them as equal as possible in
performance, as well as limiting what can be done to the vehicles so as to
contain costs of building and maintaining, providing an ideal opportunity
to compete in a competitive environment without stretching the budget.
Vehicles from 1964 to 1974. Modified Class opens up the scope to allow and
essentially open ended range or modifications to
be carried out to any saloon car or silhouette versions thereof to enhance
performance and handling at a budget that a person wishes to commit. Open
Wheeler Class allows a person to build a purpose built chassis and body
with the motor and running gear of their choice, once again to a level of
sophistication and performance so desired.
Racing Format
Racing is generally on tracks between 750m
and 1200m. The events are sprints of usually 6 laps
duration, although longer distance events are run on occasions to add to
driver and spectator appeal. The racing is conducted in both clockwise and
anticlockwise directions. Because of the wide range of performance that can
occur between competitors, handicap systems are used to provide a greater
opportunity to all persons to enjoy the pleasures of winning. For
Championship events all racing is from scratch, using marble draws to
allocate competitors on the start line.
Rewards
Generally each club runs an annual club
championship based of the aggregate points a
competitor receives over the duration of a calendar year. The points
achieved go towards selecting club champions who receive trophies to
recognise their achievements. No prize money is allowed at club and
championship levels of the competition.
State Championship events are run annually at
2 host clubs, with the aggregate points from both events going toward
selecting the State Champion from the various classes run at State
Championship Level.
Commitment to Safety
Safety will be managed without compromise,
and its management will take precedence over any other matter.
