Elliston
Elliston was the name chosen by Governor Jervois
in 1878, after
Miss Ellen Liston, the governess to the children of a local pioneering
family.
The township has good facilities for the visitor,
and
accommodation at our Park is ideal to suit most if not all wandering
travellers .
Sporting facilities include two ovals, floodlit
tennis courts, a
9 hole golf course and a licensed community Sports Centre. An airstrip
is also available for light aircraft.
Set
between rolling and pleasant sheep and wheat country and some of the
most interesting and dramatic coastline on the Eyre Peninsula, the town
has little of historical interest but is an extremely pleasant and
comfortable place for fishing, swimming, surfing and walking along the
rugged sandstone cliffs.
Elliston and the waters of Waterloo Bay offer many
opportunities for beach fisherman to catch whiting, Trevally and sweep
from the rocks. The town jetty, which is lit at night, gives anglers
the chance to get good catches of Tommy Ruff, Garfish, Whiting, Snook
and whilst you are there, it is worth your while to try for Squid.
The
jetty was originally built to service the coastal steamers bringing in
supplies to the early settlers, and transporting their produce to
market. For boat fishermen and yacht sailors, there is a concrete
launching ramp at the main swimming beach in the town.
Skindiving and spear fishing are also popular in
the Bay.
Anxious Bay
To the north of the town lies Anxious Bay (it can
be reached by
taking the road approximately 2 km north of the town) which offers
spectacular cliff top views as well as access to the area known as Blackfellows.
For
the surfer, there are few better waves than at Blackfellows,
which is reputed to be one of the best surfing places on the Australian
coast. Take the cliff top scenic drive to Anxious Bay where you will
discover this surfing wonder. It's not uncommon to share the waves with
a school of dolphins which also enjoy the surf.
Anxious Bay, with its white sandy beach broken
only by Walkers
Rocks and one other small rocky outcrop, stretches north some 38kms
towards Talia Caves, and whilst access to the section of beach from
Walkers Rocks to Talia Caves is limited to four wheel drive vehicles
only, this beach offers excellent beach fishing for Salmon and the
occasional Tailor or Mulloway.
The
shores of Anxious Bay, easily accessible by direct road or via an
alternate scenic drive capturing magnificent coastal scenery, provides
also excellent beach fishing for Whiting and a concrete ramp offers
easy access for boat fishermen to these waters and those of nearby
Waldegrave Island, where fishermen will be rewarded with catches of
Garfish, King George Whiting and other species of Whiting.
Locks Well
& Sheringa Beach
 Locks
Well beach is only a 15kms hop south of Elliston, offering one of the
most consistent catches of Australian Salmon in the state.
This beach consistently produces large Australian
Salmon that surf fishermen base their stories on.
The popularity of Locks Well encouraged the
community of
Elliston to construct a 120 metre wooden staircase (282 steps !) to
provide a safe and leisurely access to the beach.
 A
lookout has also been constructed, to take in the magnificent view of
the coast line.
The road to Locks Well from the Flinders Highway
has also been
recently bitumised, relieving the driver of those famed corrugated
secondary roads .
On
the other hand Sheringa Beach, 41 kms south of Elliston, is also famed
as one of the many beaches that produce good quantities of Australian
Salmon,
Sheringa Beach, just 8km off the Flinders Highway
turn off,
does not offer the same comforts in road travel, though it does offer
the same calibre in abundance of fish. It offers a magnificent backdrop
of large white dunes and provides excellent beach fishing for whiting
in the numerous green holes, whilst to the west, you will be rewarded
with good catches of sweep from the rocks. Well-worn tracks will direct
you to these locations. Travel a little further west and the second
Sheringa Beach offers you surf fishing for salmon at its best.
