Elliston Cliff Top Drive
Elliston offers two breathtaking scenic cliff top loops. The roads to both are part bitumen and part gravel and are regularly maintained to provide a good surface for conventional vehicles.
1. LITTLE BAY CLIFF TOP LOOP: from the lookout take in the superb view of the outlying islands, including Top Gallant Isles, Flinders Island, Pearson Island and part of Waldegrave Island. Bird Rock, Waterloo Bay and the Elliston township and silos with farmland beyond can also be seen from the lookout.
2. ANXIOUS BAY CLIFF TOP LOOP: includes Anxious Bay views as well as the islands and Blacks surf spot. It has the added attraction of sculptures dotted along the cliffs.
Mural @ Elliston Community Hall
Finished in 1992 and repainted in 2014 the mural was painted under the guidance of artists Siv Grava and John Turpie. The mural depicts the life of Elliston, taking in both the maritime and rich agricultural heritage. Smaller murals on the old shop and the front beach public toilets were also commissioned.
Talia Caves
Talia Beach offers good beach and rock fishing.
Visit ‘The Woolshed’, a large cavern carved into the granite cliff by wave action. A walkway and wooden steps provide access onto the rocks to view the cave with its honeycombed ceiling, dark crevices and nearby blowholes.
Not far away is ‘The Tub’, a large crater with a tunnel connection to the sea and a granite base. It is 10 – 30 metres deep and 50 metres across. Beyond ‘The Tub’ is a dramatic cliff face that offers long views to the south along Talia Beach.
The monument to Sister DB Millard who drowned 24th June 1928 is also located here.
Murphy Haystacks
An outcrop of unique pink granite boulders, Murphy’s Haystacks is a great photo opportunity. It’s located 40km south east of Streaky Bay on the road to Calca and Point Labatt. Visitors can take the walkway between the two groups of rock outcrops and read the interpretive signage.
These ancient wind worn granite inselbergs, huge rocks purported to be over 1500 million years old, occur in numerous places on the Peninsula. Entry is by donation at the gate.
Fishing
Elliston is right in the middle of 4 Salmon fishing beaches; Sheringa, Locks Well, Mount Camel and Talia.
Off the beaches and Jetty in Elliston, you're capable of catching fish such as Tommy Ruff, Garfish, King George Whiting, Squid, Flathead, Gummy Sharks and Salmon(Make sure to get some directions on best locations for particular fish from us first!)
